Basic Dojo Etiquette

  1. Upon entering and leaving the dojo, students bow in the direction of O-Sensei's picture. When entering or leaving the mat, do a FORMAL bow (full seiza).

  2. When the instructor comes onto the mat, he/she and the students bow to O-sensei's picture and then bow to the instructor, formally opening the class.

  3. The instructor should be referred to as "Sensei" during class instruction.

  4. When the instructor claps, students should sit down promptly and listen and watch attentively.

  5. Before and after practicing a techniuqe, one should bow to one's partner.

  6. When a student arrives late for class, he/she should bow in and sits seiza ont he edge of the mat. Wait for the instructor to admit you to the class.

  7. Students must ask the instructor permission to leave the class early or to leave the mat for any reason; excludes injuries.
